The opposite of the apocalypse is a neighborhood

This is a great article that I stumbled upon via the Contemplify NonRequired Reading List (which also has a great tribute to Wendell Berry).

…that when we find somebody who shares the same baroque obsession as we do, nothing else matters for the foreseeable future. We shout ME TOO and all of a sudden we are talking about container gardening or arepa making or the 1989 Baltimore Orioles and we lose track of time.

…that when we receive praise for something we didn’t actually do, or that we sort of half assed, or that we cribbed from somebody else, it doesn’t feel as good as the time that we tried really hard and worked for hours and the end result wasn’t perfect but it was ours, damnit.

…that we secretly all think of ourselves as being the weirdo in the group.
